The Red-necked Grebe continues to favour the river off Redwall Reedbed and was seen to catch a small eel there. 2 Common Sandpiper along the back stretch of the river and 20-50 Black-tailed Godwit were over the Weaver Sluice Gates. A juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker was in the hedgerow by the old I.C.I tank.
No.6 tank had 4 Common Pochard, 90 Tufted Duck, while a male Marsh Harrier were all noted. 3 Common Buzzard and 10 Sand Martin were by Marsh Farm.
Butterflies were a big feature of the marsh today and 20 Ringlet on the banks of the old I.C.I tank are about to rewrite the status of this former rare species in Cheshire. Also noted were 25 Large Skipper, 100 Meadow Brown, 40 Gatekeeper, 6 Red Admiral, 25 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Comma, 2 Green veined White, 4 Peacock. A grand total of 10 species and 334 butterflies.
