24.04.14 Birdlog

One Great crested Grebe, a pair of Gadwall, two Wheatear at the Canal Pools. One male Whinchat and two Wheatear on pipes No.1 tank.

Plenty of potential breeding in evidence pair of Swallow entering nest site Spring Farm and the usual Collared Dove nearby. A pair of Stock Dove entering probable nest site Lordship Marsh and a further three birds pumping station. Small number of Sand Martins prospecting along the banks of Manchester Ship Canal. .

A Lesser Whitethroat singing along Rake Lane and another one chattering away on Lordship Marsh. One Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Reed Warbler, 2 Sedge Warbler also singing at Lordship Lane. One Willow Warbler singing No. 4 tank. Plenty of singing Whitethroat and Chiffchaff about and a few Blackcap.

Observer: Brian Rimmer.

Nice to have a wander round this morning and to hear the spring migrants in full song.

A kettle of 7 Common Buzzard over No 3 tank.

I heard my Reed Warbler of the year and a brief Grasshopper Warbler alongside No 6 tank.

Highlight was a cracking male Whinchat on the fence posts alternating between Straight Length and Hares Lane.  I spotted another bird on a further post but it was moving at the time so get a positive identity although I suspect a second chat though

Observer: Ian Williams
