07.07.12. Birdlog (All birds reported from No 6 tank unless otherwise stated).
1,010 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Ruff, 12 Redshank, 26 Dunlin and one each of Greenshank and Green Sandpiper. 3 juvenile and one adult Avocet (presumably birds from the Burton Marsh collective?). A single Common Sandpiper, one Spotted Redshank, An adult Little Gull stopped off briefly before heading NE, one adult summer and a 2nd summer Mediterranean Gull were present for a short period and were likely the two seen after the rain deluge yesterday? A male Marsh Harrier was seen over N o 4 tank and a juvenile Yellow Wagtail was also noted.
A Fox was blatantly unconcerned by the time of day (noon) and wandered through the shallow waters of the tank looking for a snack. The scolding Coots and Shelduck made it think better and it went on its way.
Observer: Paul Crawley, Frank Duff, WSM and Ian Igglesden.
After visiting the marsh I (painstakingly) went through an overall image of the BTG flock and countered 710 birds on the image. An additional flock of 300 in flooded fields by the M56 motorway bringing the total number of godwits on the marsh to 1,010 birds (95% were adults in fine breeding plumage) !

It’s not all about numbers and a solitary Greenshank on No 6 tank looks impressive!
