04.06.12. Birdlog (Ring-necked Duck)

04.06.12. Birdlog.

2-3,000 Canada Geese on Frodsham Score this evening.

41 Tufted Duck and 200 Shelduck were present on No 6 tank.

During the morning a Hobby was observed catching Dragonflies over the Pumping Station/Splashing Pool. A male Marsh Harrier over No 6 tank and later over Frodsham Score.

6 Avocet, 2 Black-tailed Godwit 41 Curlew coming to roost on No 6 tank; An intriguing Snipe dropped into rough grass as the sun was setting over the tank?

200 Black-headed Gull. additional to the breeding colony (mostly 1st summer birds) also came to roost.

2 Cuckoo at No 6 and No 4 tanks. The latter site had a singing Willow Warbler.

Highlight was a drake Ring-necked Duck which I found at 8.55 pm within the Tufted Duck flock. I was low on mobile phone credit but managed to text Paul C, Birdline NW, Whipper and Frank D before my phone crashed! Frank was the first to arrive and got a Marsh lifer! Followed by (in the diminishing light) Mark Payne (see Nature Notes #3 for additional sightings).
